1. Is there a curfew in Aberdeen?

Yes.  It is a petty offense for any person under 18 years of age or younger to be at any public place when not accompanied by the minor’s parent or guardian or an adult designated by the minor’s parent or guardian between:  
 
 (1) The hours of 10:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. of the following day, except on Fridays and Saturdays.  
 (2) The hours of 11:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. of the following day on Fridays and Saturdays.

3. Where do I register my bike?

Bikes can be registered at the City Treasurer's Office:

The cost is $2 for the life of the bike.

4. Does the Aberdeen Police Department hold police auctions?

The city tries to hold annual actions for surplus city property.  Contact the city manager’s office for further information.

5. Does the Aberdeen Police Department have a lost and found?

The Aberdeen Police Department does hold lost and found keys and eyeglasses in the front lobby:

Additional found items are logged in and kept in the APD Property Room.

6. Where do I license my pet?

Registration fees are $7 per year for an un-fixed pet and $3 per year for a fixed pet. There is a $55 fine for an unregistered dog or cat.

7. How can I request our street be closed for a block party?

Block party requests must be made at a City Commission meeting, which are held every Monday night at City Hall, located at 123 South Lincoln Street. Please call the city auditor’s office at (605) 626-7023 to be placed on the agenda. 

You can also fill out a Street Use Request Form on our website under "Forms" or also available at the Police Department.

8. Who do I contact regarding an officer’s actions?

If you would like to compliment or complain about an officer’s actions, you must submit your comments in writing. Please complete and return an Officer Complaint Form.

9. Is it legal to use fireworks within Aberdeen city limits?

No, you will be cited and must appear in court if you violate this ordinance.

10. How can I ride along with an Aberdeen Police Department officer?

To request a ride-along, please complete and return the Ride-Along Request Form and the Waiver

11. How do I get a copy of a police report?

To request a copy of a police report, please first fill out and submit the Public Record Request Form to the Records Office which is available on our website under "Forms" or at our office.  The Records Office will forward your request for reports to the City Attorney for approval for release.  No reports can be released for any open and active cases.  If your case involves a current arrest or was recently sent to the State’s Attorney’s Office, you may need to contact the State’s Attorney’s Office at (605) 626-7130.  
To obtain a copy of a vehicle accident report, please call Accident Records at (605) 626-7059.  If you have questions regarding release of records, you may call the Records Office at (605) 626-7060.

12. Where can I be fingerprinted?

Fingerprinting is done at the Aberdeen Police Department Records Division by appointment for City Day Care providers: 114 2nd Ave. SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.  Please call (605) 626-7995 for an appointment. 

Fingerprinting for shoplifting violations and for children’s safety and identification is also available. All other fingerprinting such as for employment purposes is done at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office: 22 Court St. SE Aberdeen, SD 57401, (605) 626-7100.

13. How do I request a presentation by a police officer?

For presentations on the Northern State University campus, please call (605) 626-2474. For all other presentations, please call (605) 626-7000.

14. Can I get an Aberdeen Police patch for my collection?

No, at this time we do not exchange patches. 

15. How long do I have to shovel my sidewalk after a snowfall?

It is the duty of owners of any real property fronting or abutting upon any sidewalk to keep the sidewalk free and clear from snow and ice at all times. Property owners have 48 hours after the snowfall has stopped to remove snow and ice from their sidewalk. Owners of corner lots are responsible for clearing the sidewalk through to the street. If snow and ice has not been removed within 48 hours, the city may remove the snow and ice and assess costs against the property owner. The owner may also be cited for noncompliance and fined.

To report someone for not clearing their sidewalk, please call code enforcement at 626-7017.

16. Is it legal to shovel, blow, or blade snow into the street?

Residential Areas: No, it unlawful to do this at any time, either before or after the plows have gone by.

Commercial Areas: It is unlawful for the owner of any commercial real property to blade or shovel snow from their real property into any street or public ground.

Exception: Property owners in Zone 1 with a zero setback from the sidewalk may shovel or blade snow from the abutting sidewalk into the street prior to the completion of Zone 1 snow removal operations.

To report someone unlawfully blowing, shoveling, or blading snow into the street, please call dispatch at 626-7911.

17. How can I find out about street sweeping schedules for my area?

Street sweeping normally begins toward the end of April and continues until the end date is officially announced. Streets per area are swept once per week on the same day according to the schedule. Street sweeping is now done between the hours of 4:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Please clear the streets for street sweeping so the sweepers can properly clean the streets. 18. How can I find out if and when snow removal will be taking place?

Please visit the emergency alerts section on the home page of the city website or click on Notify Me  to sign up for email or cell phone alerts or both. Maps and schedules are available at the Police Department and at the Public Works Department. You may also call the Public Works Department at 626-7010 for a voice recording of snow removal operations at any time. Snow removal announcements are also made on the radio, TV, and in the Aberdeen News as time permits.
