Beginning July 25, 2013, texting while driving becomes illegal in Aberdeen. The Aberdeen Police Department will begin enforcing the rule immediately.
The ban applies to sending or reading any text message, e-mail, sms or instant message while in traffic. This includes texting while stopped at a stop light or stop sign. In order to legally text from your vehicle, you must completely take the vehicle out of traffic, by pulling into a legal parking place, parking lot, or driveway.
The standard fine for texting while driving is $120, but the maximum fine is $500 and/or 30 days in jail. In addition, law enforcement may keep your cell phone, tablet, or other device as evidence.
If you have any questions, please contact the Aberdeen Police Department at 626-7000.
