2023 General Fund Requests Guidelines

City Logo

Dear Community Organizations,

The arrival of May each year signals the beginning of the City’s annual budgeting process. The general fund provides the majority of funding for the provision of services through City departments. Like all budgets, and even households, there are always more wants or needs than funds available. For that reason, each year difficult choices must be made to provide for a balanced budget. In most years, the City makes a limited amount of general funds available to community organizations to support operational or program expenses. In order to be considered for City general funds in 2023, the following criteria have been put in place.

  • Requests for 2023 City of Aberdeen general funds shall be made by sending a letter, on official letterhead of the requesting organization, to the office of the City Manager no later than 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
  • The letter should detail the request to include the need for the funds and the overall impact it will have on the community or a specific population within the community.
  • A current budget for the requesting organization/program should be attached to the letter requesting City general funds.
  • Due to limited funds, requests over $25,000 will generally not be considered unless they are providing direct services to the City.
  • Organizations are limited to one request annually and may not request support from multiple City funds.
  • Requests will be reviewed by the City Manager and a funding recommendation will be included with the formal budget approval process in September. Organizations will be updated on their request following the adoption of the 2023 City budget.
  • To submit a request:  Mail or hand deliver to City of Aberdeen, City Manager’s Office, 123 S Lincoln St, Aberdeen, SD 57401.  Requests can also be emailed to The deadline to submit your request is no later than 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
