January 23, 2013: Mardi Gras Masks

This week’s art project is molding Mardi Gras masks using plaster bandages. Teens will work in pairs to form the molds on each other. Teens with sensitive skin will have a model to form the mask on. Petroleum jelly will be spread over eyebrows and noses and cheeks so that the masks will lift away easily when dry. We will cut the plaster bandages into pieces, dip them into water, and then place them onto teen’s faces to form the masks.

Masks should take about 15 minutes to dry, at which time we will lift them off the faces.

*Note- eyes and nostrils will not be plastered over.

We will decorate the masks the following week.
